Abrazando Raíces: Jazz elegant and modest by Kimberly Fergie

In many occasions, the music is in charge to do shine the talent that exist behind of people that uses like means of interpretation, expression or, simple artistic manifestation. Notably this always happens when “somebody” is behind of such soundstream, have innate ability to show to the whole world their gifts and skills with their voice, their letter or, with some musical instrument.

Clear example of the above, is the young and Mexican charismatic, Kimberly Fergie, who at her age little by little is capturing the most demanding public of Jazz scene, in NY and México City. Proof of it, is that she has been the first national singer to record with Terry Waldo – one of the maximum exponents of Ragtime today- as part of her first cd release of long duration named   “Abrazando Raíces” / “Embracing Roots” which carry printed touches of Dixieland and touches of BeBop.

“[…] Embracing Roots have a lot of meanings. First, the need to take your roots and then open your wings, the more foundation you have, the more impulse you have to fly […]” said Kim with enthusiasm when we ask her for the reason and name of the album, that it’s in diffusion through world-renowned music platforms.

Talk to her, is to assume in automatic the load feel and artistic print of her work. Maybe proof of it, are the songs that conform the album, with contemporary versions of big musical legacy: Edith Piaf and Consuelo Velázquez, this last, recognized for having this beautiful anthem named “Bésame Mucho”. But for Fergie, it means even more. “[…] With their songs, this muses teach me how to sing, create new versions of this songs was an act of gratitude towards their legacy, and try to introduce myself with people through the language of their songs.

The poblana’s work that she´s developing now, is only part of constant practice and effort that end in this album. “I believe that my path can’t be named as a musical dream or professional career […] I am just aware of the tools that I have in my present and the work that I have to continue to do, day by day to advance […]”

Living in NY, gives her the opportunity to be spectator of the Jazz scene in their full expression and even more, other disciplines. “[…] it’s crazy. Doesn’t matter day or time, the art shows in the big apple in each corner and it surpasses all the senses. From there and of her experience in the artistic field, she thinks artistic education imparted since basic education, could result in a cultural change into society.

Jazz was and will be the genre for excellence to receive Kimberly from her first shows in places of México City, Puebla and New York, also Jazz has been the place, which has left her be free to play and express with her sweet voice, accompany with the beautiful sound of piano and other musical instruments. Despite being like that, Fergie doesn’t discard the idea to venture other styles “[…] I’m only an instrument, the art manifest through me in different forms and can’t leave term Jazz encapsulate creativity. But something that I’m sure, I will always carry is the motto of, “if it doesn’t swing, it´s not Jazz” Phil Schaap.

For this moment, Fergie is in search of opportunities that allow her to have a closer approach with the public from other sides of the world, with the purpose of being able to fall in love with her through the letter of introduction [Abrazando Raices – Embracing Roots]. And what a presentation letter! She has been elegant and modest, without leaving aside, the vocal and musical quality that compose it.

On the other hand, the idea of being immersed in other types of projects(cinema, theater, musicals, etc.), close to music and Jazz, denote in her tone of voice some intrigue and surprise, which accompanied by laughter, let us imagine the result could be interesting, …”I am certain that everything will happen in time… if I continue with a certain front, things will come.

To complete the interview, Kimberly Fergie leave three basic recommendations to readers: First of all, an iconic version of Blue Prelude in the voice of Susan La Marche, which have a very particular meaning for Fergie. The second (and for obvious reasons) is the complete discography of Terry Waldo “the day he dies, the ragtime and his unmatched style of stride will be irreplaceable”. And the end, is a text that always go with her: Cabaret Místico, Alejandro Jodorowsky.
